Halfenprox is a multipurpose pesticide also known by the names: Brofenprox, MTI-732, Sirbon 5 EC, and 1-[[2-[4-(bromodifluoromethoxy)phenyl]-2-methylpropoxy]methyl]-3-phenoxybenzene or C24H23BrF2O3. It was originally introduced as a pesticide by Mitsui Toatsu Chem., Inc. in 1994, according to the Fluoride Action Network.
Since then, it has been used as an acaricide to kill mites, cutworms, cockroaches and other crop-eating pests. It is part of the pyrethroid chemical family, like acrinathrin, imiprothrin or cyhalothrin. Halfenprox’s mode of action is as a sodium channel modulator which inhibits healthy function in a number of pests leading to death.
This pesticide is most commonly applied to fruit such as apples, pears, papayas, tea, limes, lemons, oranges and other citrus fruits. The pesticide is not registered for use in the U.S. by the Environmental Protection Agency and it was banned as the active ingredient by the European Commission along with 319 other pesticides in 2003. Halfenprox is registered for crop use in Taiwan, China, Japan and Vietnam, where it is used on fruit.
